Honey Figs with Goat Cheese and Pecans

Figs, oh how I love thee, let me count the ways.
Just as you are- picked from a tree, ripe and lucious. I dream of the day when I can enjoy the pleasure of your company leaning against your trunk for all it’s glory. You are my favorite of all the fruits and my prayer is-God, let this be so before my time is up.
Freshly picked from a farmer at the local market as you head to my kitchen.
Drizzled with honey stuffed with goat cheese rounds rolled in pecans. Your taste surprises me when, as you are gently sprinkled with salt and freshly ground black pepper leaving me with sweet and salty in one. Oh, my goodness I am eating slow to savor you, and thank-you Virginia Willis for this splendid recipe from, Bon Appetit, Y’All: Recipes and Stories from Three Generations of Southern Cooking.
Chilled once you are pureed and then mixed with homemade Vanilla Bean Ice Cream just before the final minutes of churning. Then, I will drizzle you with honey once again and let you melt in my mouth as I sigh with joy. This will be as soon as I save up the $25 it is going to cost me to turn you into a quart of icecream.
Baked as a Clafoutis, hot and steamy from the oven with a dollop of fresh whipped cream and powdered sugar, which awaits your presence my little figlets.
Spread on hot buttered biscuits warmed just enough to melt the thick gooey jam that you have become.
Anyway you are offered, as I never refuse the chance to sample your divine taste in every and any dish that is so elegantly created on your behalf, for you are my true love.
Honey Figs with Goat Cheese and Pecans
Virginia Willis, Bon Appetit, Y’All: Recipes and Stories from Three Generations of Southern Cooking
1 cup chopped pecans
Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 (6-ounce) log fresh goat cheese
12 to 18 fresh figs ( Brown Turkey, Calimyrna, or Black Mission)
3/4 cup honey (preferably tupelo, orange blossom, or sweet clover)

To prepare the goat cheese, place the chopped pecans in a shallow dish and season with salt and peppper.

Roll the goat cheese log in the pecans and coat evenly.

Refrigerate till firm, if necessary, then cut into 4-6 uniform rounds.

To prepare the figs use a small paring knife and starting at the stem end, quarter the figs, but don’t quite cut all the way through the bottom.

Open them slightly to form a flower.

To serve, divide the figs evenly among 4 or 6 shallow bowls or small plates.

Top each fig with a round of pecan-crusted goat cheese.

Drizzle the honey over the figs and cheese.

Season with salt and pepper and serve. (4-6 people)

There’s nothing quite as luscious as a ripe fig is there *sigh* That dish looks great!
I have just discovered figs in the last year or two. They are so interesting, voluptuously sweet and oddly beautiful. The flavors you have pulled together here sound intriguing too. I would really like to try this!
I don’t know if this is dessert or an appetizer — but I’ll take it any which way. These are just scrumptious!

Can you believe I’ve never had a fresh fig? They are kind of hard to come by around here, but I’m always on the look out!
apparently i really need to get my act together and try some figs! i’m guessing fig newtons don’t really give an appropriate impression of the fruit, and i keep seeing ‘em all over the blog world. this particular combination sounds like perfection itself.
I love figs. They are only in season for such a short while. You don’t even need the honey if they are oozing and ultra ripe. I love this classic combination. I could go for a plate of these right now.

I must say, you are a very hard working lady. In this waste land of inactive blogs, you regularly produce interesting and well put together articles. Nice pic. also - must be using a lot of macro mode.
I like your choices of honey - I would go with the orange - mild and will not take away from the main theme.
I am thinking that the pecans should be pan toasted in a little butter and salt - what do you think.
Fig lovers, thank-you for your comments and thoughts on this most lucious of fruits. I am also thrilled that so many of you are enjoying the photos as I am working hard on learning to take good pictures. Yes, I do have a macro lense-which I adore!
For those of you that have not tried figs, you are missing out and will regret your delay in eating these. So go find some this weekend, and that means you too Grace, Fig Newtons do not count.
Great suggestion on toasting the nuts and I would most defineately do this next time, though I would forgo the butter and go for a simple oven toasting. There will be a next time, soon I hope.
I ate a ridiculous quantity of figs when I studied in Rome, and I’m still suffering withdrawal now. They’re available at markets here sometimes, but not regularly.
What a perfect way to enjoy figs! I need to go buy another box at Costco, this recipe looks terrific!
This reminds me of when I was younger, when I would eat the figs from my grandfather’s tree. What I wouldn’t give to still have that endless supply to make this. This dish looks absolutely wonderful and you can bet that I’m going to make it the next time I get my hands on some figs.
